A few years ago, author and photographer Cécile Zahorka fulfilled a dream: she built herself a camper, launched the "Forgotten Horses" project and has been traveling to Europe's forgotten horses ever since.
In her 2-language table book (German/English) the photographer takes herher readers on her adventurous, visually stunning journey and presents portraits of 15 rare horse breeds. These include, for example, the Senner horse, which, although it has been at home here for hundreds of years, is almost unknown. Or horses that live partly wild or semi-wild on remote islands, such as the Faroe horse or the Cabalo-Galego. But Cécile Zahorka also meets horses in state studs particularly noble representatives such as the Kladruber stallion Generalissimus Energia XLIX.
Did you know that many horse breeds are now threatened with extinction? Photographer and author Cécile Zahorka came across this question when she discovered that Black Forest foxes can also be found as gray and black horses or that an ancient Nordic horse breed on the Faroe Islands is on the verge of extinction with fewer than 90 animals.
With Forgotten Horses, the photographer embarks on a journey of discovery off the beaten track. Her research reveals how many rare and sometimes unknown horse breeds still exist - mighty cold-blooded horses and traditional warmblood breeds - sometimes right on our doorstep.
Accompany Cécile Zahorka to the hidden horses of Europe on remote islands and high-altitude mountain landscapes where free herds graze. A detour to North Africa takes her to the Berber horse, one of the oldest and most influential horse breeds in the world.
This book is a plea for diversity - with an eye for the unique.
