Author and Ph.D.-holding historian Felicitas von Aretin takes her readers on a journey to ten of her favorite monasteries. She isn’t looking for the secluded world behind high walls, but rather for the people who bring these places to life: members of religious orders and artists, preservers and innovators, people who have consciously chosen a different way of life—and people who are creating something new from the monasteries’ legacy.

At Eberbach Abbey, known for its viticulture and as the setting for The Name of the Rose, cultural history and the present come together. At Chorin Monastery, a lost monastic culture is brought back to life both digitally and analog, while at Lüne Monastery, a Protestant women’s community cares for extraordinary art treasures.
